The special report on Surnames in Ireland was originally prepared by Robert Matheson and issued as an Appendix to the Twenty-ninth Annual Report of the Registrar-General for Ireland. It has been for some years out of print, but a motion having been made in the House of Commons by Mr. Jeremiah MacVeagh, M.P. for its reprinting, the Government have now sanctioned its issue as a Stationery Office Publication.
In re-issuing the report, the author has inseerted, as an Addendum, the List of the Names of Irish Septs given in the Book of Arms, compiled by Sir James Terry, Athlone Herald (1690), now preserved in the British Museum.
The firt Editon of this book was issued in 1890 with the object of assisting Registration Officers and the Public searchig the Indexes of Births, Deaths, and Marriages by collating the varieties in the form and spelling of names usually met with, and also those names differing altogether in form, which had been ascertained to be used interchangeably.
