Second
Census Of Kentucky 1800 by Glenn
G. Clift
This book contains 32,000-odd names copied by the compiler from tax lists for the 42 Kentucky counties of 1800, housed in the Archives Department of the Kentucky Historical Society. Since the first two censuses of 1790 and 1800 were destroyed when Washington was burned by the British during the War of 1812 these tax lists are very important.
List contains the following information for each tax payer:
For purposes of this list only Persons "Chargeable With The Tax," was copied. Researchers desiring additional information concerning a name or names appearing on the list can secure the data by personal search of the original volumes (now on microfilm) or by having the information extracted by professional researchers. Of the 42 counties making up Kentucky in 1800 only one could not be represented in the Second Census. This is because the courthouse of the county, at Prestonsburg, burned in 1808 with many of the most important early records, presumably including the county's sets of the 1800 tax returns. However, it is possible that one of the four volumes for Mason County contains the Floyd County list inasmuch as the tax commissioners were required to begin their rounds in early March, and Floyd did not become a county until June.
The lists of 1800 could not be located for three other counties, 1799 and 1801 lists wre used for these three counties.
