Indiana's African American Heritage - Essays From Black History News & Notes edited by Wilma L. Gibbs

In 1979 The Indiana Historical Society produced its first issue of Black History News & Notes, a newsletter devoted to publication of research findings related to the history of African-Americans in Indiana. Through it articles book reviews, and other items of interest, this newsletter has increased interest in black history and has encouraged much research in that field.

In this anthology, Gibbs, senior archivist, African-American history at the Indiana Historical Society, has selected and edited sixteen articles that first appeared in Black History News & Notes and includes such topics as education and culture, women's history, history of cities and rural communities, biographies, and Indiana African-American history sources. Among the authors are professional and amateur historians, graduate students, and professionals form other walks of life.

"While research into the history of African-Americans in some other states has been more extensive, the existence of a publication like Black History News & Notes has been a boon to those in Indiana interested in local history. The articles it publishes continue slowly but perceptively to broaden our knowledge of Indiana African-American history". R.J.M. Blackett
