The
American Census Handbook by Thomas
Jay Kemp
This book is a guide to the thousands of published census indexes currently available to researchers including indexes for the 1920 census, the last publicly released Federal Census. This guide is arranged geographically and by general topics. The geographic section is listed alphabetically by state and county and then chronologically within that local area. The general topics section includes those indexes that focus on specific ethnic groups such as Chinese Americans and Dutch Americans as well as indexes to current and former military personnel and other subjects.
The census is generally the first resource that genealogists use to document a family. Having each page of the census from 1790-1920 on call, seven days a week, twenty-four hours ad day is an incredible step forward. Having this handbook to guide genealogists to the thousands of published census indexes currently available will make researching these records much easier, whether in the original, microfilm, or digital versions.
